Overview

The MFDS exam is an internationally recognized dental qualification. It demonstrates completion of foundation/basic postgraduate dental training. The exam is bi-collegiate and organized jointly by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow

Components

MFDS Part 1:

A written exam designed to test the range of knowledge and understanding that forms the basis of direct patient care. Consists of 180 multiple-choice questions (single best answer type) and lasts three hours. Covers attributes such as problem-solving, evidence evaluation, critical reading, up-to-date knowledge, and patient management.

MFDS Part 2:

A practical exam evaluating reporting skills. Candidates interpret radiological images and provide accurate reports. Includes both oral examinations and rapid reporting sessions.

Eligibility and Registration:

Qualified dental surgeons of good professional standing, eligible to practice in the country where they gained their degree, are eligible for the exam. Fellowship is awarded by examination, and successful candidates can use the letters MFDS after their name.
