Overview

IELTS assesses a test taker’s English language proficiency across four skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Delivered on either a computer or paper, IELTS is the only high-stakes language test recognized for migration across Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom1.

Components

Listening:

A 30-minute section with four parts, including conversations and academic discussions. Candidates answer 40 questions based on what they hear.

Reading

A 60-minute section with three passages and 40 questions. Topics cover academic and general content.

Writing

A 60-minute section with two tasks. Task 1 involves describing visual information, and Task 2 requires writing an essay.

Speaking

A 14-minute face-to-face interview with an examiner. Candidates discuss various topics and demonstrate their spoken English skills.

Modules: IELTS Academic:

Suitable for those planning to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels or seeking professional registration (e.g., doctors and nurses).

IELTS General Training:

Appropriate for immigration purposes, work experience, or training programs.

Scoring:

Scores range from 0 to 9, with half-band increments. Overall band score is an average of the four skills. Each skill receives an individual score.

Recognition:

Accepted by universities, employers, immigration authorities, and professional bodies worldwide. Widely recognized as evidence of English language proficiency.
