Fellowship Examination of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists

Overview

The MRCophth exam rigorously assesses ophthalmologists’ ability to provide high-quality and safe patient care. It offers accreditation to further career ambitions in ophthalmology. The Royal College of Ophthalmologists welcomes applications from ophthalmologists and trainees worldwide. The MRCophth examinations assess the quality, safety, and efficiency of patient care provided by ophthalmologists. The range of examinations includes those for ophthalmologists in training, medical students, and consultants.

FRCOphth Exams:

The FRCOphth qualification consists of four examinations, assessing both practical and theoretical knowledge of ophthalmology practice. These exams are crucial for trainees on a GMC-approved Ophthalmic Specialist Training (OST) program. Successful completion of these exams allows progression and Certification of Completion of Training to apply for a consultant post.

The FRCOphth exams include:

Part 1 Fellowship Exam:

A theoretical paper based on the OST curriculum’s learning outcomes for the first two years of training. Refraction Certificate: A practical exam assessing clinical refraction skills.

Part 2 Fellowship Written Exam:

A multiple-choice, single best answer question paper. Clinical Assessment of Skills and Competencies (CASC): A clinical exam evaluating practical skills and communication.

To become a Fellow of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth), candidates must pass all relevant exams. After achieving FRCOphth status, candidates can use the FRCOphth post-nominal. Note that membership of the College is also required to use the post-nominal.
